SABIAN SYMBOLS

The Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 symbolic images, one for each degree of the zodiac. First developed in 1925 through a collaboration between astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler, these symbols offer poetic, intuitive insight into the deeper meaning of each zodiacal degree. The system is structured so that each symbol corresponds to a specific degree within a sign, numbered 1 through 30—making the Sabian degree one number higher than the zodiacal degree (e.g., 10° Aries uses the 11th symbol in Aries).

Over time, the Sabian Symbols have been recognized as rich in metaphor and layered with meaning. Marc Edmund Jones emphasized the relationships between symbols—especially by opposition—in his book The Sabian Symbols in Astrology. Dane Rudhyar later expanded on their philosophical depth in An Astrological Mandala, organizing them into five-degree sequences to explore symbolic evolution.

In TimePassages, each chart degree is paired with its corresponding Sabian Symbol, along with a one-line summary written by our founder, Henry Seltzer. These interpretations offer a modern and transformational perspective on the original imagery. In preparing these entries, our team also reviewed the original wording to gently update any outdated or exclusionary language—aiming to preserve the symbols’ intent while honoring today’s cultural awareness.
