COMBUSTION

Combustion is a traditional concept that describes the condition of a planet in close proximity to the Sun. Because the Sun’s brightness overpowers nearby planets, this condition can weaken or obscure the planet’s ability to express itself clearly, depending on its distance.

A planet is said to be under the beams when it is within about 17 degrees of the Sun. Closer still, it is considered combust—typically within 8 to 10 degrees—a condition often seen as more challenging or restrictive. In this state, the planet may struggle to act independently or have its qualities fully seen.

At the heart of this range is cazimi, a rare and potent condition where a planet is within 16 to 17 minutes of the Sun’s exact degree. Unlike combustion, a planet in cazimi is thought to be strengthened or elevated, seated in the heart of the Sun and infused with its power.

These distinctions can add important nuance when evaluating the condition and effectiveness of a planet in a birth chart.
